Monthly Beauty Favorites | November 2015

Though I've been trying lots of new products in the last month, I don't think I'm necessarily ready to call any of them favorites. I have found several lovely new products that have been rocking my socks lately and I thought I'd share them all with you.

Gift Ideas for Romance Readers

Shopping for a book lover can be a bit difficult at times. On the one hand, you could probably just give them an Amazon gift card and call it a day, but that can seem a bit lazy. If you know someone's TBR pile is already a mile high, you might not want to give them yet another novel to add to the list (and risk having it be something they aren't even into). Sometimes you just want to give those quirky, fun trinkets that put a smile on someone's face. I've put together a list of things I think a fellow romance reader might enjoy receiving this holiday season. Keep in mind that there are many different kinds of romance readers in the world, so I've tried to capture different aspects with different items. I've even got some things thrown in that a general book geek would enjoy. Though some of the items are very straight-forward in their bookishness, some were chosen more for their spirit and the fact that I think certain romance lover would enjoy them. I've broken up the gifts into several different categories to make the guide a bit easier to navigate.

The In-Between Clean

I recently purchased the Sonia Kashuk Brush and Sponge Cleanser thinking it was a spot cleanser that I could just spritz onto my brushes and wipe clean. Let's just say there's a reason you should always fully read labels before purchasing. The spray is actually a cleanser that needs to be applied to damp brushes and washed out like a traditional cleanser. Womp womp. Though it didn't work in the way I had expected, I've found the perfect way to use it.

Cris Reads: DIRTY DEEDS (Mechanics of Love #3) by Megan Erickson

Alex Dawn is saying no to men. No to bad relationships, disappointments, and smooth-talkers. Focusing on her family and her job at Payton and Sons Automotive keeps her mind occupied and her heart content. She doesn’t really miss a man’s touch, until one night, one shows up with the body of a god and a voice from her dirtiest dreams.

L.M. Spencer is only in Tory, Maryland, to scope out the town as a possible site for one of his company's hotels. The British businessman didn’t expect his car to break down or to find the hottest little American he’s ever seen holding a tire iron, piercing him with bright blue eyes.

They agree to one hot night, one dirty deed to burn out the chemistry between them. But from their first kiss, Alex can’t stop saying yes to this man. And when Spencer’s company threatens everything she cares about, they must make the choice to stand together or apart.

Beauty Stocking Stuffers Under $16

My favorite part of a Christmas gift to shop for (and sometimes even to receive) is the stocking stuffer. It's those sweet little extra trinkets hidden away in your stocking that can often be the most fun or useful items. I've put together a list of some very affordable little beauty kits that would make an amazing stocking filler. These are also great options if you just need a small gift for someone or are participating in a White Elephant or Secret Santa exchange. Apart from the mini value kits I've also found some individual items that I've either tried and love or think are would make a great gift.

A NYX Haul & First Impressions

I've been in a very hauly mood lately, which is obviously not the best for my wallet or my dwindling makeup storage space but great for playing with new products (and posting about it). I placed an order to NYX recently to pick up a few old favorites I needed to stock up on and try some new products and saved quite a bit with a 25% off code. Here's what I got and what I thought.

Playing With Crayons: Clinique's Whole Lotta Chubby Set

I recently came across this adorable little set of Clinique Chubby Sticks on Sephora's website and just had to pick it up. I'd never actually tried any of their Chubbies but had heard great things about them from various bloggers. I love using products in a crayon format because they make getting ready so much easier. You just dab on some product, blend it with fingers and you're set. For a lazy beauty lover who's always running late a whole set of crayon products sounded like heaven.

A Quick Review of My October Allure Beauty Box

If you read my review of my September Allure Beauty Box you'll know that I fell in love with the subscription box because of the quality and value of the products I received. Though I didn't expect for the October box to top it, I was still hopeful that I'd find some interesting products and something that worked for me. Suffice it to say the October box was a total bummer and even the products I was excited to try ended up being flops. In the interest of full disclosure, I figured I'd put together a quick review of what I got and why it didn't work for me.

Derma E: A Brand That Truly Delivers

Derma e is one of those brands that doesn't have much hype surrounding it in the beauty world but always impresses me with their products. I've tried several of their exfoliating products through subscription boxes in the past and have been very pleasantly surprised. After receiving a 20% off coupon code for their website last month I decided to scope out their product range and found some items that really intrigued me. I've given them all a thorough trial run and was even more pleasantly surprised by the results! Here's what I got and what I thought.

Finding My Perfect Fragrance With the Commodity Fitting Kit

While perusing Sephora's website a few months ago I came across an intriguing new fragrance brand, Commodity, whose clean, minimalist packaging and personal approach to fragrance just really appealed to me. I checked out their website, read a bit about their ideas for creating an individualized scent cocktail and discovered that you can get a fitting kit with a sample of each of their 10 fragrances sent to your door. This lets you spray and play on your own schedule and pick up the scent (or combo) that works best for you.

Blog Tour Review: I NEED A HERO (Men in Uniform) by Codi Gary

Sergeant Oliver Martinez joined the military to serve his country—not plan parties. But after a run-in with his commanding officer, Oliver is suddenly responsible for the Alpha Dogs Training Program’s upcoming charity event. Worse, he’s got to work with the bossiest, sexiest woman he’s ever met—who just happens to be the general’s daughter.

When it comes to military men, Evelyn Reynolds is not interested. And with the opportunity to launch her new PR firm at the charity event, she doesn’t have time for some sexy, arrogant jerk with a hero complex. Evelyn is determined to keep things professional—if only she can ignore how Oliver’s muscles fill out a t-shirt and the infuriating way he makes her heart pound.

But when tempers flare and a scorching kiss turns into so much more, Oliver and Evelyn will have to decide if this attraction is forever…or just for now.

Fun, Frugal Ideas For a Fall Night In

As much as I love having nights out with friends, I, like most people, have a budget I need to adhere to and nights out can really add up. But saving money doesn't always have to mean sacrificing fun, so I've come up with a few ideas for a memorable night in that won't break the bank.

Rebecca Minkoff Dupes Under $35

While perusing the Forever 21 website recently I came across several bags that are dead ringers for some gorgeous designs by Rebecca Minkoff. I'm a huge fan of her handbags and although I only own one, I am constantly scoping out sales to see if I can find a new addition to my collection. Most of her bags come with a $175+ price tag, and that isn't necessarily in everyone's budget, but now you can get the same look for a fraction of the price.

The Allure Beauty Box Reveal & Review | September 2015

I recently decided that it was time to break up with Ipsy and move on to a different beauty subscription service. Well actually, I decided a couple of months ago but kept forgetting to unsubscribe. Suffice it so say that September will be my last Ipsy Glam Bag for the time being but I've moved on to greener pastures. A few months ago Allure revamped their beauty subscription service, formerly known as Sample Society, into the new and improved Allure Beauty Box. I've been keeping my eye on their recent boxes and when I saw the spoilers for September's box, I knew I had to have it. Here's a look at what came in the box and what I thought:

A Must Read: BADGER by C.M. McKenna

Adrian Birch is nobody.

She once sold her sister’s engagement ring to get numb on Vicodin. Now in recovery, out of work, and burrowed in a dingy Boston apartment, it’s clear sobriety doesn’t make her somebody.

The first time she feels something isn’t when her wrist is broken from a hit-and-run but when the accident is avenged by a local antihero, the Badger. Then Adrian isn’t numb. She’s obsessed.

She scores her next hit of the Badger by faking a suicide attempt on a bridge over the Charles River. After her rescue, she takes what she needs however she can get it — following the hooded vigilante through the streets of Boston, forcing encounters until she knows better than anyone alive that the Badger is trouble.

He has no remorse. No moral code. He’s nothing but a ball of human impulse racing through the streets on a ten-speed with a paint gun weaponized against petty injustice. But he’s her buzz that kills the numb. Just the latest addiction Adrian can’t seem to quit.

When Boston police put a price on the Badger’s head, her actions spawn a movement she can’t control, and Adrian can’t guess if she’s saving the Badger, the city, or herself.

Deep Cleaning Your Brushes With Sigma

A few months back, my lovely sister-in-law, Mary, gave me the Sigma Spa Brush Cleaning Mat for my birthday. At the time, I had seen their brush cleaning glove and knew about the basic concept but didn't really think it would make that much of a difference in the cleaning process. Although I had meant to try it a few times since receiving it, I kept putting it off because I was either in a rush or it completely slipped my mind. After going wayyyy too long without washing my brushes thoroughly (and seriously breaking out as a result) I decided to give my brushes a bit of a spa day last weekend and cracked out the Sigma Cleaning Mat for its debut. Here's how it went.

Blog Tour Review | DIRTY TALK by Megan Erickson

Brent Payton has a reputation for wanting to have fun, all the time. It’s well-earned after years of ribbing his brothers and flirting with every girl he meets, but he’s more than just a good time, even though nobody takes the time to see it. When a new girl walks into his family’s garage with big thoughtful eyes and legs for days, this mechanic wants something serious for the first time.

Ivy Dawn is done with men, all of them. She and her sister uprooted their lives for them too many times and she’s not willing to do it again. Avoiding the opposite sex at all costs seems easy enough, until the sexy mechanic with the dirty mouth bursts into her life.

Budget Fall Fashion Buys: Old Navy

My favorite part of the end of the summer is always checking out all the new Fall fashions that are hitting the shelves (and web). Being that I'm a savvy shopper (aka super cheap) I like to look for great deals that still embody those brand-spankin'-new trends and fresh finds. I've always been a big fan of Old Navy and their inexpensive approach to style so it's no surprise that I've been scoping out their new arrivals this month. Here are some new pieces that I think will make your transition from Summer to Fall a stylish one, without breaking the bank.

Worth the Hype? The Urban Decay Naked Skin Concealer

There's been so much chatter in the beauty world about Urban Decay's Naked Skin Weightless Complete Coverage Concealer and how it measures up to the cult favorite NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer. A few months ago I picked it up after hearing Lily Pebbles rave about it and have been testing it on and off to see how I really feel about it. Here's what I've discovered.

A Week of Romance | #RWA15

About a month ago the Romance Writers of America Conference was held in New York City, and although I wasn't registered for the conference I was able to attend several romance events that week since I'm just a short subway commute away. Even though it's so much time after the fact (typical Cris), it was such an amazing, inspiring experience that I really just wanted to share some thoughts and photos with you all. Let me preface this post by warning you that most of the pictures I took that week turned out either blurry, dark or I forgot to take pictures all together, so try to keep your visual expectations in check. Plus, I constantly switched from my camera to my phone so the quality of the shots will differ from one to the next. Prepare yourself for a wild ride.

Release Day Review: UNEXPECTEDLY HIS (Smart Cupid) by Maggie Kelley

A match made in Manhattan...

By-the-book Marianne McBride wants to prove she's more than a computer geek in a pair of horn-rimmed glasses. But how did she end up hiding in a cake, waiting to sing "Happy Birthday" to Nick Wright, a sexy and arrogant serial-dater? Not exactly part of her plan. Especially when she finds herself kissing the birthday boy, and then running like hell...
Nick falls for no woman. No strings, no commitments, and no relationships. Not even with the sweetly curvaceous bombshell from his birthday. But then he's hit by a bombshell of his own. He needs to find the perfect faux fiancée, or kiss his key to the executive washroom goodbye. Fortunately, his matchmaker sister has the perfect girl in mind.
Now Nick and Marianne have to pretend they're in love for six weeks. No dating. No sex.
And definitely no acting on the wickedly-hot chemistry that could ruin everything...

Cris Reads: MAKE ME (Broke & Beautiful #3) by Tessa Bailey

With the future of her family's hedge fund on her shoulders, Abby barely has time to sleep, let alone find love. And her best friend Russell acting like a sexy, overprotective hulk any time their Super Group goes out in public definitely isn't helping her single status. But after a near-tragedy lands Russell in her bed for the night, Abby's suddenly fantasizing about what he looks like shirtless. Chest hair and tattoos—who knew?
As Russell struggles to keep Abby at a safe distance, she begins to see through his tough-talking exterior—and acknowledge her own feelings. Now she's ready to turn the friend-zone into foreplay…and make him lose control.

Blog Tour Review: NEVER LOVED (Dark Obsession #1) by Charlotte Stein

Perfect for fans of Abbi Glines, the first novel in the Dark Obsession series tells the story of a beautiful wallflower who falls for a chiseled street fighter—and learns just how dangerous love can be.

Beatrix Becker spent most of her life under the thumb of her controlling, abusive father. And now that she’s free and attending her dream college, she has no idea how to act like the normal crowd: partying, going on dates, even having a conversation. Then she meets Serge Sorensen. Big and surly with a whole host of riotous tattoos, Serge is supposed to scare the hell out of her. But beneath his harsh exterior, Beatrix discovers a kindred spirit who knows what it’s like to be a misfit. Most exhilarating—and terrifying—is what he does for a living: illegal street fighting.

There’s nothing like the rush Serge gets from the intense athleticism and brutal glory of combat—though his chemistry with Beatrix comes close. Slowly at first, he introduces her to his world, where he lives by instinct, passion, and desire. He even helps her out with her equally traumatized brother. But when Serge gets in too deep with the wrong people, he ends up paying in blood. And suddenly, just as Beatrix has been drawn into Serge’s perfectly sculpted arms, she’s thrown once and for all into the fight of his life.

Review & Giveaway | The Highlander Takes a Bride by Lynsay Sands

A bold, seductive laird meets his passionate match in a scintillating Highland romance from New York Times bestselling author Lynsay Sands.

Sword fighting, swearing, and riding astride come naturally to Saidh Buchanan. Simpering and holding her tongue-definitely not. Raised alongside seven boisterous brothers, Saidh has little interest in saddling herself with a husband…until she glimpses the new Laird MacDonnell bathing naked in the loch. Though she’s far from a proper lady, the brawny Highlander makes Saidh feel every inch a woman.

She has an angel’s looks, a warrior’s temper, and seeks out his kisses with wanton eagerness. Little wonder that Greer is intrigued by his comely guest. When reckless desire overtakes them, he’s more than willing to make an honest woman of her. But Saidh is the target of a hidden enemy, and Greer faces the battle of his life…to safeguard the woman he wants above all others.

Why We, As Readers, Love Imperfect Heroes

At Sunday dinner with my family this past weekend the conversation somehow veered into a discussion on the Romance Industry. This isn't a typical topic for us, and though my family knows I read and review romance novels, they've never actually asked me any questions about the genre before. We got to discussing sub-genres and niches when I mentioned a question that I recently posed to a bestselling historical romance author which had really upset me at the time. I asked the author if she ever had or would consider writing a plus-size heroine, as the average dress size of the American Woman is a 14. Her response was something along the lines of “I'd love to but I don't think publishers would go for it”. My brother pondered that for a minute and responded that to a certain extent it made sense because people often look to romance novels for characters who represent ideals. But in my experience, the opposite is true.

My Bronzer Collection

It's summertime, when everyone wants to look a bit bronzed and glowy. Since I usually try to avoid being out in the sun, I like to slap on some bronzer to give a touch of warmth to my pale skin and try to create that sun-kissed look. I've received quite a few from subscription boxes and friends, apart from the ones I've actually purchased for myself, so I've somehow amassed quite a variety. Here are all the bronzers I have in my arsenal.

Review & Giveaway | The Maddening Lord Montwood (Rakes of Fallow Hall) by Vivienne Lorret

Frances Thorne learned at an early age to rely on herself. Yet, losing her job and her home and watching her father carted off to debtor’s prison all in one day, is too much for her to bear alone. When a generous offer of assistance falls into her lap, she ignores her better instincts and decides to take a chance.
