Drugstore Beauty Haul & First Impressions
Wednesday, August 5, 2015
I recently picked up a few drugstore beauty items from Walmart that I'd had my eye on and thought I'd share my thoughts on how they all worked out for me. Some of them were better than expected and some were much worse. Let's take a look.
Tree Hut Firming Sugar Scrub in Italian Mocha
This stuff definitely goes in the 'worse than expected' column. In the past I have tried and adored Tree Hut's Brazil Nut Scrub (which smells like caramel) so I thought I'd give this one a go because of its firming claims. Does it firm my skin? Honestly, I can't even tell because I'm so overwhelmed by the awful scent. When you sniff the product in the tub it does smell like sweet coffee but the second you add water and start to rub it into the skin the smell transforms to damp earth and week-old coffee grounds. I'd say the scent is too masculine for me but I can't even imagine a man wanting to smell like this. If you are looking to pick up a new body scrub I would definitely recommend their Brazil Nut one instead.
Tree Hut Moroccan Rose Renewing Hand Cream
Sadly, yet another disappointing product from Tree Hut. In no way does this actually smell like roses. The scent is more of an incredibly sweet shea butter that isn't really appealing to me in any way, even though I usually love shea scents. The formula is also more liquidy and less creamy than expected. Womp, womp.
Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen SPF45
After hearing so many people rave about this sunscreen I expected it to feel incredibly sheer on the skin. It actually felt somewhat thick but absorbed into the skin well. If you don't normally wear sunscreen you will definitely be able to feel this on your skin.
Bio-Oil
I picked this up after reading a ton of recommendations online (and one from my cousin Teresa). I've always had issues with scars and stretchmarks so I figured I'd give it a try. It has a relatively mild scent which I'm actually thankful for. I apply this to my skin when I get out of the shower and though I haven't been using it very long I feel like it's helping fade my marks. I have heard people say this stuff is good for acne scars as well but I'm a bit hesitant to put it on my face. Has anyone tried it for this?
Maybelline Dream Pure BB 8-in-1 Skin Clearing Perfector in Light/Medium
I picked this up after seeing it used on Gigi Hadid because if it's good enough for Gi it's good enough for me. I had never really purchased any drugstore BB creams because the ones I had tried were all too dewy for my oily skin. This one actually goes on relatively matte and does an impressive job of resisting oil throughout the day when maintained. It has light coverage, blends in well, and was still on my face after a long day at work. I'm impressed.
Maybelline Lash Sensational Waterproof Mascara
Although the wand is a bit thicker and less maneuverable than I had hoped, this is probably one of the best drugstore mascaras I've tried recently when it comes to holding a curl - which tends to be my biggest concern. The bristles are tiny which results in lots of volume but not necessarily a lot of length. This definitely hasn't replaced my holy grail mascara but it has topped a lot of ones I've tried recently.
Rimmel Scandaleyes Eye Shadow in Bad Girl Bronze
This is a great, affordable eye shadow crayon that's creamy and pigmented but still blends out well. The staying power is longer than I expected and I can actually get away with wearing it without a primer underneath. I was surprised to find that it contains bits of sparkle but once it's blended out you don't really notice it much. If you're looking for an inexpensive cream shadow stick for a fuss-free smokey eye, this one is a inexpensive option.
Rimmel Lasting Finish Soft Colour Mono Blush in Santa Rose
This is the only item that actually didn't come from Walmart, but from Asos. The powder blush is creamy and pigmented and the perfect pale pink to perk up your cheeks. It's a lovely, natural blush for ladies who don't typically wear much makeup. Definitely my favorite product from the whole haul!
What products from the drugstore have you been loving lately? Anything new I should keep an eye out for? Let me know in the comments below.

I had to read this post once I saw Bio-Oil! I have a small bottle of it and really need to start using it because I am currently losing weight and so scared of even MORE stretch marks. Ugh. Perhaps I should start applying it after I shower, as well. I've heard great things!! Let me know how it works for you over time!!
