The Unconventional Drugstore Primer: Nivea Men Post Shave Balm

There's been a lot of chatter in the beauty blogger world in the last few months surrounding the Nivea Men Cooling Post Shave Balm thanks to Nikkie from NikkieTutorials. A few months ago she randomly decided to borrow her boyfriend's shave balm after running out of primer and it made her makeup stay intact all day long! Since then I've heard several bloggers talk about this balm and how amazing it is as a primer and how much it helped keep their face from getting shiny throughout the day. I have frustratingly oily skin, so anything that is said to keep skin from getting shiny and lock makeup in place all day has me intrigued. Add to that the fact that you get 3.3 oz of product for just around $6 and I couldn't help adding a bottle to my recent Target order. I've been using this baby for the last few weeks and MY MIND IS BLOWN.

Let's start by breaking down the product itself. The balm is a white and very liquidy and it blends into the skin almost like a lotion. It has a cooling effect and leaves the skin looking incredibly smooth and feeling slightly tacky, which makes me feel like it gives my makeup something to stick to. The product definitely has a strong men's aftershave scent, which I'm sure might bother some people, but it fades in about 20 minutes so it doesn't really bother me. The product doesn't contain any alcohol, so it doesn't sting and has never made my acne-prone skin break out. What it does contain is a large amount of glycerin, which keeps the skin's natural barrier in tact and keeps skin moisturized and soft. It also has the benefit of really making products stick to it and keeping colors looking vibrant.

I was hoping the balm would help improve the wear-time of my makeup but the results were actually amazing. I never realized how much my makeup really fades during a workday until coming home and looking in the mirror after a day with the Post Shave Balm under my makeup and still being able to see my bronzer and blush on my cheeks. During a normal day I have to blot my face before lunchtime because my face feels like an oil slick, and once again by 5:00pm. With the balm, my face felt normal at midday and I only really had to blot my t-zone at the end of the day. I realized that by using the balm as both as my moisturizer and primer the results were even better!

So does the Nivea Men Post Shave Balm really work as a primer? Hell yes! And it's probably the best one for oily skin I've ever tried! It not only made my skin feel baby soft and smooth, but it kept my skin from getting oily much longer than even a $36 primer and greatly improved the longevity and vibrancy of my makeup. At just around $6, this stuff is an incredibly bargain! The balm also comes in a non-cooling version but I really love how soothing this one is on the skin. If you're looking for something to smooth out your skin and make your makeup last longer, I couldn't recommend this more. All the hype is deserved on this one so do yourself a favor and stop by the men's shaving aisle next time you're at the drugstore.
