Blog Tour Review | Bad For Me (Rock Canyon #5) by Codi Gary

Codi Gary returns with another fabulous Rock Canyon romance: when veteran marine Everett Silverton meets the town’s smooth-voiced DJ Callie Jacobsen, sparks fly—but is passion enough to give these wounded souls another chance at love?

Callie Jacobsen isn't about to open her heart to just anyone. Not so very long ago, trusting someone changed her life forever—and not in a fun way. Now she's better off focusing on her career, her friends, and her dog. So when former Marine Everett Silverton takes an interest in her, Callie's more than a little wary. No matter how charming he is, men are a bad idea. In fact, she's got the scars to prove it.

But Everett isn't convinced Callie should shut everyone out—especially not him. He may be a hero to the people of Rock Canyon, but he's got his own demons, and he bets they're not that different from Callie's. Still, he knows it's going to take more than chemistry to get her to let her guard down. Everett will do whatever it takes to show her she's safe with him. All she has to do is take a chance, take a step … and take his hand.

MY THOUGHTS
Although Callie and Everett were introduced to readers in earlier novels in the series, we really never got to understand their hidden pain and the scars they carry both physically and emotionally. I thought it was great that their romance begins to brew before they ever really meet in person, via their chats when he calls in daily to her radio show. Their bond begins to grow before they even set eyes on each other, which I'm actually really a fan of in romance. As much as Callie tries to ignore her attraction to Everett, fate seems to always find a way to push them into each other's path.

After being brutally stabbed by her fiance during a mental breakdown that resulted in the death of her mother and dog, Callie has a ton of guilt, insecurity and fear weighing her down and keeping her from ever really opening up to a man. Everett, an ex-marine with his own scars and a history of PTSD, makes Callie fear that opening her heart to him could result in another betrayal. As much as Everett loves Callie, her history of alcohol abuse worries him. He spent too many years dealing with an alcoholic father to go through that again. But although Callie has fought her way back to sobriety, the biggest barrier in their growing love is her inability to let go of her past and give herself over completely to Everett. Luckily, a bit of separation and an accident make these two realize how much they need each other and allow Callie to finally take some lighter steps in the right direction.

Callie and Everett were such inspiring characters though they are both far from perfect. Scarred, mistrustful and a bit reclusive, they really do seem like two halves of the same whole. Even though they've been through some serious ordeals, they're still both such kind and caring people. With all the burdens these characters carry, you might expect this novel to be a bit broody and serious but there's actually a lot of humor and camaraderie throughout. Caroline is such a hilarious, outspoken and pervy best friend and she really tries to knock some sense into Callie. I also love it when novels feature pets as integral characters because, let's face it, they're a big part of our lives. Ratchet was definitely a wing-man and protector throughout the novel and deserves his due.

All in all, I'm a big fan of the Rock Canyon series and loved reading about these two wounded lovers finding their perfect partner. Callie and Everett really add a hidden depth to the Rock Canyon world and I applaud Codi Gary for taking us on the roller-coaster of emotions that is Bad For Me. I can't wait to see what's next in the series!
