What I've Been Watching | September 2014

I know this is called 'What I've Been Watching' but since I watch A LOT of TV shows for my podcast, many of them not so great, I'm going to stick to just my monthly favorites.

Outlander (STARZ)
Let's start things off with a repeat favorite from my August list. Outlander has just gotten better and better every single week. The mid-season finale was this past weekend and I AM SO ANGRY. I mean, the episode was absolutely fantastic! This show keeps the action, the excitement and the romance coming. What got me angry was the idea that I won't get to watch another new episode until April 2015! Actually, angry is probably not the right word. More like DEVASTATED! I think I might start going into withdrawal pretty soon.

If you've never seen it, now is definitely the time to get hooked. This show has it all. Time-travel, drama, suspense, action and lots and lots of sexiness. The acting is superb, the writing is wonderful and the emotions that the show portrays and the ones it makes me feel are so genuine. Seriously, go and watch this now.

The Fall (Netflix)
Yet another show that was just plain AMAZING. I didn't realize that there were only 5 episodes in the first season until I got to episode 4 on Netflix. And as you can imagine, I once again became angry that a beloved show was not giving me more episodes exactly when I wanted them.

On the show, Gillian Anderson (The X-Files) plays a detective in Belfast hunting for a serial killer, played by Jamie Dornan (Fifty Shades of Grey). And no that's not a spoiler. The viewer knows what he is from the very beginning. The story is incredibly gripping and exciting. Anderson and Dornan's characters are so multidimensional and authentic. You feel as if these are real people, not actors dramatizing a fictional scenario. And can I just say, I'm a little worried by how much I'm attracted to a serial killer. But day-ammmn! Jamie Dornan brings the creepy and the sexy, inspiring all those lovely, unrealistic hopes to somehow saving him.

This show was a complete surprise, in both the story and how frickin' good it is. Add this to your Netflix queue and prepare yourself for a binge. And with just 5 episodes, it's a much smaller commitment than most other dramas.

The Mindy Project (FOX)
The Mindy Project is back for its third season! And though I watched the last two seasons on and off, this season be bangin'! I'm really happy to see Mindy and Danny together as a couple! They're so damn cute and somehow fit so well together even though their personalities are pretty much polar opposites. I love his grumpy old man shtick! I feel like the quips and jokes have really been stepped up this season and I can't wait to watch more.

Madam Secretary (CBS)
This was another surprise love! When I originally saw the trailer for this show while covering the Fall Upfronts for my TV podcast, Antenna Heads, I didn't think I would like it. I'm not into politics and don't particularly like watching politically driven shows. But after watching the first 2 episodes, I've got to say I'm on the hook. Téa Leoni plays an ex-Spy college Professor who reluctantly becomes the Secretary of State. She has sass, intelligence, and confidence galore, without being cocky or disingenuous. It's great to see a strong woman on TV in a position of authority who isn't represented as a 'Queen Bitch'. And as much as I love Scandal, I appreciate that Madam Secretary doesn't bring affairs or interoffice romance into the mix. Though she does have an adorable husband, with whom I think she shares great on-screen chemistry and affection. If you're looking for a new show to check out this Fall I would say give this one a gander.

And those are all of my TV favorites for the month of September! I know it's a short list but I hope I made up for the lack of quantity with quality. This month I'm sure the list will be longer as there are oh-so many new Fall shows and returning ones to catch.

Anything special you've been loving on TV this past month? Something I should be adding to my Netflix queue? Are you a binge-watcher or do you like to see the episodes as they air?
