MY THOUGHTS
I've been a huge fan of Maya Banks for years and have probably read most of her work. That said, as soon as I heard about her new Slow Burn series, I knew I had to read KEEP ME SAFE. Ramie and Caleb's story really pulled me in from the very beginning. I love that the author added a bit of a supernatural element to the novel by giving several characters in the series psychic abilities. Having a main character who has psychic powers and has had to mentally and physically share the burden of a multitude of violent attacks really adds a extra dimension to her personality.
There were several times in the novel when I was really able to relate to Ramie, even though I've never had to endure the level of trauma she has. She is such a strong woman and I was really pulled in by her recounting experiences from her childhood. Having reached a point where she felt like death would be a welcomed solace, she still finds the fight and endurance to push through and continue to work to save the lives of other innocents. I really admire her pheonix-like spirit and she was definitely my favorite character in the whole novel.
Although Caleb is incredibly rich and powerful, I enjoyed that he didn't act stuck up or entitled. He certainly likes things a certain way and has a bit of a possessive streak, but it's mostly endearing because all he really wants is to keep his loved ones safe, sometimes at a detriment to others. He sometimes makes mistakes with regards to Ramie and Tori, but they are made with the best of intentions. With all of the horrors that Ramie has lived through, Caleb just wants to make her smile and reassure her that she is safe and truly loved.
I think Caleb and Ramie have great chemistry and some really hot and sweet moments. They don't always see eye-to-eye on how to protect each other but they are always open about their feelings for one another.
The novel definitely had some extremely intense moments. And by intense, I mean I didn't know how the characters could possibly survive them. Emotionally, physically. They left me feeling distraught and clenching my chest. I literally had to take a pause for a few minutes and just process the hurt and anger I was feeling. It's distressing when the characters you are coming to know and feel for are torn asunder. But I guess that's bound to happen with a sadistic killer plaguing the heroes.
Maya Banks shows us that heroes don't always get to walk off into the sunset scot-free without enduring some serious struggles. There are burdens they must carry and losses they must survive to really be bonded together. I definitely had some issues with the novel and some of the turns which the story took but ultimately Maya Bank's KEEP ME SAFE made me feel things. So many things. And that is often what I appreciate most in a novel. This book was suspenseful, incredibly sexy and sometimes, just plain shocking. I can't wait to see what Maya Banks has in store for us in the next books in the series.
